2017
real and surreal
Real and Surreal was recorded on Thanksgiving Day in 2016. An early morning session and one late at night exhibit slightly different personalities. Side A is an ode to summers past: recollections of long days post solstice, exploring the public parks and neoclassical libraries of Pittsburgh. Side B contains a single improvised track, Processor, which is a meditation on the indifference of technology, information systems, and computers.
An analog monophonic synthesizer is the only sound source, processed and looped by effects pedals in real time, recorded to a single stereo track.

"Aptly named, J Butler's "Real and Surreal" is exactly that: an exploration of both the pastoral elements alongside the sonic manipulation and shoegaze-informed work that hovers above." - Beach Sloth
